Forever amazed by technology!

These last two weeks I have been so busy with catching up the blog on our trip in April, getting Case good and ready for the state assessment test, and chauffeuring him back and forth to soccer tryouts.  I finally am caught up and so I wanted to get more current and write about our adventure with Skype.

Last Saturday (May 5),  we held our first Skype with A!  We wanted to do it the week before, one week after we last saw him, but due to some idiot independent contractors who cut the AT&T fiber optic line to our neighborhood, we had to postpone.  Yea, thanks guys!

As the title of the post says, I am forever in awe of technology and how we increasingly can communicate more efficiently.  I mean it was very cool being able to get on wifi in Poland and follow things back home on Facebook (and check our local newspaper online to ensure the house didn't burn down, lol).  Still more amazing is Skype and its ever increasing capabilities.  Here we are in South Carolina Skyping/video chatting with Poland which is over 5000 miles away! SO cool!

When we got on the call, we were worried about not being able to say much and had our iPads with Google translate all ready to go just in case.  However, when we connected though, Skype itself could detect where you were calling to and when you initiated the chat (along with the video), it automatically translated into the language for the country!  Even cooler!  Which essentially meant that while we were video waving and talking etc, we could also type in the chat box back and forth.  Huge.

During the call, A was so darn cute and talked to us for over 45 min (thank you again instant translator). He even typed some things like his name himself, which was neat.   Not much mind you, but it was sweet what he did do.  We re-verified that he indeed loves cars...especially Cars (the movie) and would like his room to have things like that in it.  Done!  He also again confirmed that his favorite color is a resounding "CZERWONY (red)!", so it sounds like he and Daddy will be cheering for Wisconsin, while Mama and Case back the Maize and Blue, lol.   He LOVED seeing the dogs when we held them up to say hi and wave, lol!  Lucky was the  particular favorite as he yelled out "Lucky!" lol!  We typed to the foster mom how he was doing about the adoption and she said is was very excited about everything and that he misses us alot (awww!).

We ended after about 45 min. because Brian was on call and had to get to the hospital (which we told them and they understood).  We made plans to do a second call in two weeks (so a week from tomorrow).  It is an awesome technological wonder and I can't imagine how we could manage during the process without Skype.  We are also lucky the Central Authority actually encouraged the communication and video chats in our case; because that is not always the norm we have found out.

We can't wait until next Saturday to talk with A again.  For this weekend though, I'll plan to enjoy Mother's Day with Case, while sending lots of love over the ocean to my second little boy  :)

  1. How perfect. I love that he is so excited! Alex has a Cars themed room as well. In case you are looking for it Target carries Cars 2 bedding. That's where we found Alex's. Our boys would really get along well. You are so lucky to be able to video chat with him. I so wish we had been able to communicate with Alex and Amelia during our long 5 1/2 month wait between trips. Next year you will get to celebrate Mother's Day with both of your boys.

  2. Very cool and exciting! Skype is an awesome tool! I use it to talk to the nieces and nephews back home. My youngest niece and nephew just turned a year. When I went back home last week I was scared they wouldn't recognize me... However, thanks to Skype they came racing over to me!! My sister and I were happily surprised.

What did we do before all of this great technology??

  4. So cool! And thanks for sharing your story - I loved hearing all the details :) Skype is awesome, and I hope more and more people will be able to stay in touch with their kids this way! Of course, ideally they'd make the wait between trips shorter, but... :) So excited for you guys and can't wait until you have your return date!
